  Environmental Commitment

In its commitment to attune to sustainable forest management, APRIL has made a strategic decision to plant the Acacia. This species of fast growing tree possess environmental qualities that promotes an eco-friendly and judicious forest plantation. It also possesses intrinsic qualities that produce superior pulp and paper grades.

APRIL adheres to a strict no burn policy in our forest lands and plantations. APRIL continues to fight illegal logging and we ensure that no illegal wood enters our products or process. APRIL has recently forged an alliance with the Indonesian Forestry Department, Riau Government and WWF Indonesia to combat illegal logging.

The development of sustainable wood supply is a top priority for APRIL. To meet our Mill's annual production capacity of 2 million tonnes, we have to develop at least 350,000 hectares of sustainable plantations from our concessions, joint operations and smallholder tree farms. At the end of 2002, we and our partners, other concession owners and community Cooperatives, had developed about 175,000 hectares. We estimate our operations will be fully sustainable with plantation fiber by 2009.

The Group also respects the right of every man to enjoy the vast forests in Riau and accepts the full obligation to conserve its rich natural environment. Therefore, it has set aside 20% of the total net productive areas of its concessions as reserve sites to preserve bio-diversity and to conserve flora and fauna. This figure is double what is legally required under government regulations.

Stringent quality controls are religiously followed to produce world-class products from both pulp and paper mills. In February 2000, both our APRIL pulp and paper mills have been awarded ISO 9002 for their quality management.

The Forestry Division achieved full ISO 14001 certification in 2003.

Other areas that are taken seriously by APRIL are air and water effluent guidelines and the Group subscribes to both international and national performance standards. APRIL not only outperforms many mills in the world, but also exceeds the specifications of the US Cluster Rule for New Mills and the World Bank standards. APRIL will continue to take concrete steps to ensure it maintains its excellent environmental performance.
