WINPAQ Chiat Hin and Chiat Cheong

Welcome to the PaperOne™ customer feature, where we interview our customers to find out more about them, their company, their thoughts about the industry, and their partnership with APRIL Group.

This October, we feature Mr Ronald Teh, Product Manager of WINPAQ Chiat Hin and Chiat Cheong, who is part of the third generation of this family-owned business.

PaperOne™: Hello Mr Ronald Teh, it’s nice to meet you. Thank you for your time today. To begin, could you share more about yourself and what you do in the company?

Mr Ronald Teh: Hi, it’s a pleasure to be here. I’m Ronald Teh, Product Manager of WINPAQ Chiat Hin and Chiat Cheong and I’ve been in this industry for 14 years since entering the company. As the Product Manager, I maintain the quality of our products and assure customers our products are of the quality we promise.

PaperOne™: That’s quite a role you have in the company. Speaking of the company, could you share more about the company and what sets the company from your competitors?

Mr Ronald Teh: Chiat Cheong was founded by Mr Teh Hoo Kim and Mdm Lim Chooi Ing in 1961 as a paper cum stationery manufacturer. Through years of hard work and dedication, they have managed to grow this family-owned business to where it is today. WINPAQ Chiat Hin was established in 1969 under the company to specialise in envelope manufacturing.

As Malaysia’s leading envelope brand, our company produces a wide variety of standard, corporate, and specialty envelopes for customers worldwide. I think what sets us apart from the others is our focus on quality and innovative design. Our envelopes have been accredited with the ISO 9001 certification, and we are the first envelope manufacturer in the South East Asian region to achieve this. Also, our advanced production facilities operate under a strict environmental management system.

PaperOne™: That’s impressive, juggling between producing quality products and doing your part for the environment. Does it happen to fall under your company’s corporate social responsibility efforts?

Mr Ronald Teh: Yes, we are committed to environmental conservation. Our production processes also meet ISO 14001 standards and we continue to uphold the certification accredited to us. We also use PEFC-certified materials for our products, which helps our products remain sustainable. As part of our efforts to incorporate renewable energy, we have installed solar panels to harness solar energy for our operations and we collect rainwater for toilet use and machine cleaning to maximise resource efficiency.

PaperOne™: It’s admirable how your company is committed to environmental sustainability. You mentioned the use of PEFC products to produce your goods. Is there a reason why your company chooses to use PEFC products?

Mr Ronald Teh: Going back to our conservation efforts, we chose PEFC products because it ensures that our resources are obtained from sustainable sources and that we’re not producing at the environment’s expense. As such, we have been awarded FSC Chain of Custody Certification and PEFC Chain of Custody Certification.

PaperOne™: That’s amazing! Speaking of the production process, could you share more about your company’s partnership with APRIL Group?

Mr Ronald Teh: We have been partnering with APRIL Group for 20 years. As technologically-advanced and efficient paper manufacturers, they have been a strong support to us and our business. Christine, from APRIL Group, has been a great help in our operations. From managing stock to offering the latest market insights, her assistance helps us stay competitive in the playing field.

We sell PaperOne™ Offset to our customers as they like how the paper is smooth, very white, and has a high printability. We also use PaperOne™ Offset for our own products as the paper quality is consistent, which provides great runnability in production.

PaperOne™: We’re thrilled to hear that. On a related note, recent years have seen a significant shift from print to digital formats. As a fellow company in the paper market, how do you think this has impacted the pulp and paper industry?

Mr Ronald Teh: In this digital era, consumers have been shifting away from printed material. However, this lack of demand has been offset by the increasing need for packaging. Paper still remains a good material for packaging as it is lightweight, recyclable, and reusable as well. Based on what I see, the pulp and paper industry is going through a shift in product focus.

PaperOne™: That’s a good perspective! With that shift in mind, what direction do you see your company moving towards in the next 5-10 years?

Mr Ronald TehEnvelopes are traditionally used as hosts for communication, but they can still serve other purposes such as e-commerce packaging, wedding invitations, and important legal documents. We’re looking to focus on lightweight packaging in the future. Simultaneously, we’re looking to implement industrial 4.0 in the company to increase efficiency and performance, so we can stay competitive in the market.

PaperOne™: That sounds great! Now, before we wrap up this interview, are there any interesting facts about paper that you would like to share with us?

Mr Ronald TehThe grain of the paper is actually one of the most important factors about it. It is determined by the direction of the fibres in the sheet of paper, which takes form when it is made. That’s why it is easier to fold and bend the paper without cracking when it is folded towards the grain direction.

PaperOne™: That’s a fun fact we’re sure not many know. Thank you for sharing that with us, it’s been a pleasure hearing from you!
